Hinkley Point C opts for DMR Tier III radio with Pennine

Pennine has completed the first phase of a major two-way radio project at EDF Energy's Hinkley Point C nuclear site in Somerset.

This includes the installation of a multi-channel DMR Tier III trunked radio network, alongside the supply of around 800 PD 785G digital mobile radios, all of which are manufactured by Hytera.

According to Pennine, the multi-million pound, seven-year managed contract will ultimately witness the supply of up to 3,500 radios to support operations across the installation.

It will also see Hinkley Point’s current, interim, mast and radio solution upgraded to extend coverage to include ancillary locations, such as the nearby Combwich Wharf.

Speaking of the project, Hinkley Point C manager Marcus Ransom said: “It’s not an easy task to come on site and start working to our safety, quality and delivery standards but Pennine has [succeeded].”

Other nuclear sites already supplied-to by Pennine include the Sellafield fuel reprocessing and decommissioning facility in Cumbria, as well as those operated by Magnox, Urenco and Westinghouse.

Once completed Hinkley Point C’s two reactors will supply around seven per cent of the UK’s electricity needs.
