Glasgow rolls-out UK's first outdoor digital DAS

Infrastructure company Arqiva has partnered with Dali Wireless to improve mobile coverage and capacity in Glasgow city centre

Dali has provided what it claims to be the first UK outdoor digital distributed antenna system (DAS) to the project. The roll-out also involved system integrator Cellular Asset Management, which replaced pre-existing analogue components.

According to the company, the new DAS is completely scalable, offering mobile operators the flexibility to “effortlessly update and expand their network in a plug-and-play approach.” The system involves 2G, 3G, and 4G services being delivered to 12 outdoor nodes from a central equipment room, using CWDM technology over five optical fibre rings.

Speaking of the deployment, Jon Freeman, product and technology director Arqiva, said: “Working with Dali Wireless allowed us to provide a solution where the analogue components were replaced with a state-of-the-art digital DAS system. This provides a multi operator solution and improved coverage and capacity for mobile phone users in Glasgow city centre.

He continued: “Mobile connectivity is a fundamental requirement of city living, and networks are beginning to feel the capacity squeeze as demand for voice and data continues to increase. Network densification in high footfall areas is the only way to alleviate these issues.”
