Ontix goes live with fixed wireless access gigabit service in Soho

Ontix Limited, a wireless infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider has switched on a fixed wireless access (FWA) service (capable of up to 1Gbps speeds) in the market section of Berwick Street in London’s Soho.

According to Ontix, the area has previously been overlooked by fibre providers, leaving residents and businesses with no access to high-speed broadband. The Ontix solution uses hybrid millimetre wave links to deliver connectivity to customer premises in the area.

Antony Tomlinson, Ontix’s chief executive, said: “This is a milestone deployment for Ontix. We are incredibly excited to be rolling out fibre-like, gigabit broadband in central London, connecting areas where fibre deployment has been economically challenging, and finally ending the frustration of underserved customers. Most people’s experience of using broadband is already wireless – using devices connected to Wi-Fi – so our Fixed Wireless Access solution offers an unmatched solution for quickly, easily and cost-effectively meeting pent-up consumer demand for lightning-fast, gigabit service, right across the capital and beyond.”

Ontix will begin a nationwide launch of its Fixed Wireless Services in 2020, initially offering services in central London, before offering services in other UK cities.

Through its IaaS approach, Ontix acquires and builds shareable 5G-ready infrastructure, including connectivity, which it then makes available to MNOs as part of an end-to-end managed service. The company has worked with partners – including the City of London Corporation, Westminster City Council, mobile network operators and equipment vendors – to develop a architecture that is currently enabling live multi-operator small cell solutions for street furniture assets.
