Industry giant’s innovation for hunters and hikers

Motorola Solutions has launched the TALKABOUT T800, a handset combining two-way radio functionality with a mobile app. The device is intended – according to the company – to enable “outdoor enthusiasts the ability to share and track their locations and send messages with fellow travelers while off the cellular grid.”

The location services work via a Bluetooth connection with the user’s mobile phone, upon which has been downloaded the company’s ‘TALKABOUT’ app. Once the app has been acquired, the T800 can subsequently be used as a modem to send group messages, share coordinates and so on.

Speaking of the product, a spokesperson for Motorola said: “Whether preparing for an extended trek in the mountains or upcoming hunting trip, the T800 radios make it easy to track individual locations and stay in touch.

“Hunters will especially appreciate having the ability to send messages silently, as noise can be obtrusive and disturb game. Additionally, users can set up a designated area and alert others when they are about to leave.”

Other functionality includes the ability to search local area maps using the app, as well as control of radio settings via the smartphone. A push-to-talk power boost option meanwhile can be used to extend transmission range, within a distance of up to 35 miles. The data range is 20 miles.
