Kenwood provides comms to massive new Turkish airport

On 29 October, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, opened a new $11.7 billion airport outside Istanbul, which will be supported by a Kenwood NEXEDGE second generation trunked radio system, designed and implemented by Avrasya Haberlesme Group, a Kenwood distributor in Turkey.

According to Kenwood the new system will enable terminal, air side, and technical services departments to be fully integrated. Officials claim that the airport will be one of the world’s busiest, though it expected to not be fully operational until January. NEXEDGE systems are already in use at 32 airports in Turkey.

The single site, trunked 64-channel voice and data enabled system will serve 4,500 users split across 250 user groups within a coverage area of more than 3.5 million square metres. It uses the NXDN air interface protocol with 6.25 kHz FDMA channel access, and consists of 64 NXR-5000 series repeaters, 1,000 mobile radios (NX-5800E, NX-3820GE and NX-800E) and 4,000 hand portable radios (Hand-Portable Radios: 4000 pieces NX-5300E, NX-3300E and NX-300GE).
