Report identifies rail passenger connectivity options
LS telcom UK has published a report exploring possibilities for improving digital connectivity for rail customers.
The research document - which was commissioned by the Rail Safety and Standards Board on behalf of the Future Communications and Positioning Systems Advisory Group - proposes a “three to five-year roadmap,” for roll-out of the technology. It suggests that solutions including a mobile variant of Wi-Fi, as well as 4G, and potentially 5G, are all feasible within the suggested timeframe.
Speaking of the findings, the Rail Delivery Group’s Nick Wilson said: “This work has helped us to identify the range of technical and commercial options available.
“In addition, the study will inform government of associated investment opportunities. It should generate the further essential collaboration between all relevant stakeholders, to enable the connectivity that Britain needs in the years to come.”
The publication of the report coincides with the government’s recent call for evidence on ‘commercial options for delivering mobile connectivity on trains.’
The Future Connected Rail Stakeholder Forum and the Future Connected Train and Customer Communications Steering Group are made up of representatives from UK train companies, Network Rail, and technology organisation techUK.
