Vasco Gouveia, radio technician at Chatterbox, discusses his career in the two-way radio industry

What’s the most popular type of radio system you’re asked to design?

A CALM+ system using a Hytera XPT 4x UHF carrier infrastructure.

What’s the one gadget that you can’t live without?

My mobile phone. It’s Android because that gives access to all sorts of apps that can help us remotely.

Describe your most unforgettable site visit.

One Canada Square at Canary Wharf. Because of security restrictions, the security staff on site, and the sheer amount of comms traffic monitored by the control room it just looked like I was in a movie!

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve seen while working in the radio sector?

While visiting a site I saw staff being shown a video on ‘how to behave in front of customers’. But back in the control room we saw an employee trying to moonwalk while being front of house. His expression when he realised was priceless...

What advice would you give to a young radio engineer who’s starting their first job in the industry?

The radio technology industry is moving faster every day when it comes to combining different technologies. If your expertise is in IT, it makes sense to choose a career in radio since we are using networking and computer solutions more and more.

How has your role changed since you started working with Chatterbox?

When I started my role was more focused on fixing radios that had programming issues. We didn’t have a big need for solutions and R&D. With new customers new solutions needed to be provided.

What do you do in your free time to relax?

The three F’s: family, friends and football.

Vasco Gouveia studied electrical and electronic engineering at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto. He worked as an electronics production technician for Media Markt, a consumer electronics company, for three years before joining Chatterbox in 2013.
