Ericsson eyes low latency VR
Written by: Richard Hook | Published:

Ericsson has launched a range of new telecoms software which it claims will “guarantee consistent low latency” across virtual reality (VR) and remote control settings.

The ‘Time-Critical Communication Software Toolbox’ has been designed to secure data delivery within specific latency bounds with high reliability according to Ericsson. Marie Hogan, head of mobile broadband voice at Ericsson, said the toolbox had been created with latency prioritised over throughput, which is “a fundamental difference when comparing with enhanced mobile broadband, which is best effort only”.

The software will initially only be made available to Ericsson RAN users and will be predominantly used with network slicing, when a customer is seeking to prioritise the low latency capabilities of the network over all others. After being launched more broadly, the company said the technology can help the estimated 2.5 billion mobile gamers across the world to “enjoy a lag-free gaming experience”. Ericsson recently partnered with Deutsche Telekom and Telstra to show the benefits of L4S (Low Latency Low Loss Scalable throughput) technology in reducing lag in an interactive cloud game.

According to Ericsson, the toolbox has been designed to combat key causes of low latency and signal interruptions including congestion, radio environment, mobility, protocols, power saving and network topology.

Per Narvinger, head of product area networks, said: “Ericsson continues to introduce innovative 5G solutions that fuel the global uptake of 5G. Now we are taking 5G to the next level with Time-Critical Communication, a solution that will give our customers the tools to expand their offerings for the consumer, enterprise, and public sectors and further monetize 5G effectively.”
