The prototype shows how existing TETRA radios can be repurposed for the forthcoming 4G LTE ESN (Emergency Services Network). A Sepura SC21 TETRA hand portable radio is utilised as a wireless RSM, driving a 4G ESN device, while also providing a solution for Direct Mode Operation, a capability currently not available on existing LTE devices.
The proof of concept has been developed in conjunction with the UK Home Office to show how current TETRA devices can be repurposed for use during and after the ESN transition, ensuring maximum return on investment for each force, while also making use of field-proven radios.
UK police forces have purchased over 65,000 SC Series hand portable TETRA radios from Sepura in the last 18 months, all of which would be eligible for the repurpose solution, which is available on both the SC21 and its larger sister model the SC20.
The Home Office signalled its intention to “enter into a market engagement exercise” for a direct mode, device-to-device (D2D) solution for devices using the Emergency Services Network (ESN) on 14 January 2020.
The solution will take the form of a TETRA-based remote speaker microphone (RSM) coupled to the ESN LTE handheld mobile device provided by Samsung. The contract is estimated to be worth £40 million.
